A New Era for Ontario’s Rural Tourism: Explorers’ Edge Launches Regenerative Travel Agency

Explorers’ Edge (RTO12) is stepping into a transformative era for rural tourism in Ontario with the official launch of its Regenerative Travel Agency. This initiative marks a pivotal shift from merely promoting regional awareness to offering immersive, bookable travel experiences that directly benefit local communities and businesses.

Funding and Vision
Backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, the Regenerative Travel Agency serves as a new division under Explorers’ Edge. Its mission is to create travel experiences that intertwine visitors more profoundly with the unique essence of Muskoka, one of Ontario’s most cherished rural destinations. This new model not only aims to generate economic benefits for local enterprises but also aligns with sustainable tourism practices that encourage community reinvestment.

Inaugural Offerings
The agency has rolled out two inaugural small-group, day-long packages designed to connect guests with Muskoka’s culture and heritage more intimately. Each package accommodates 10 guests per day, fostering an environment of connection and authenticity.

  1. Culture, Cranberries & Culinary Excellence
This immersive experience features a visit to the Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site, an exclusive lunch at Muskoka Bay Resort, and entry to the Bala Cranberry Festival. Guests will also enjoy artisan chocolate from Cacao Boys Muskoka, elevating their culinary journey.

  2. Heroes, History, Heritage & A True Taste of Muskoka
This guided tour offers deep insights into Muskoka’s rich tapestry of history, including visits to the Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre and Bethune Memorial House. It concludes with a delightful culinary experience at The Oar and Sawdust City Brewing Company.

A Focus on Regenerative Tourism
James Murphy, CEO of Explorers’ Edge, explains the significance of this launch. “This represents a major evolution in how we drive tourism in Ontario’s rural regions. By transitioning into direct travel packaging, we’re generating revenue and creating measurable economic benefits for our operators. It’s about ensuring these benefits reach communities equitably, reinforcing our commitment to the sustainable future of Muskoka.” Each booking contributes to the regeneration of local destinations, whether socially, culturally, or environmentally.

Industry Endorsements
Leaders from various sectors continue to express support for this innovative approach to tourism. Darren Smith, President & CEO of Lake of Bays Brewing Company and Sawdust City Brewing Co., commended the agency for its forward-thinking model. “Explorer’s Edge is leading a new approach to tourism development, emphasizing the kinds of experiences today’s travelers seek.”

Community Impact
The initiatives of the Regenerative Travel Agency not only prioritize visitor engagement but also empower local businesses. Robbie Irvine, Owner/Operator of The Oar restaurant, articulated the importance of such programs. “This initiative highlights Muskoka’s cultural and culinary treasures while promoting environmental stewardship.”

Driving Economic and Environmental Benefits
With this new inbound travel packaging, Explorers’ Edge gains the ability to influence visitor flows, extending stays and diversifying access to previously under-visited areas. This innovative model supports rural communities and small businesses while adhering to provincial and national tourism strategies, ensuring that economic stimulation is both meaningful and sustainable.

Looking Ahead
As James Murphy emphasizes, “Regenerative tourism isn’t just about minimizing negative impacts; it’s about creating net-positive outcomes.” Through community engagement, partnerships, and innovative travel packaging, Explorers’ Edge is poised to lead rural tourism in Ontario toward a more balanced, resilient, and inclusive future.
